A Rose for the Lady
This was my submission for the first round of an international origami contest. Held in the Origami-dan Discord server, Death Battle is a single-round elimination bracket competition. After making it past the grueling preliminaries where the number of competing designers was cut to the even number of 32 (the theme was Ocean and I submitted my sea turtle,) I somehow received a low seeding and got placed against world-renowned origami master Bodo Haag.
What a turn of events.
Understanding my inevitable fate, I resolved myself to go out with a bang. And I did. I lost gloriously. At the time of its creation, this model was the most impressive I had yet made. Despite facing the best submission of the entire round, the person to lose by the largest vote margin wasn’t me.
Edit (1/13/26): Looking at this with the advantage of a few months, I can assure you that the above justification is pure copium.
The design of this model was fairly uncomplicated. Structures for the rose, dress, head and stem were designed in turn, and the arrangement of these features allow for details on the dress as well as a feminine looking face and an expedient collapse. Unfortunately, I was rushing to meet the competition deadline, and the upper body portion of the dress lacks the detail required to balance out the rococo ornamentation present elsewhere on the gown. I will likely correct this in a future refold.
